Suggestions for articles (link or upload)
We need two articles
- "Does the Digital Divide Matter More? Comparing the Effects of New Media and Old Media Use on the Education-Based Knowledge Gap" Wei & Hindman (2011) in Mass Communication & Society does the digital divide matter more.pdf I think this is a really useful article in terms of framing the discussion and I've seen it cited in recent blog posts about the digital divide -Maggie
- "Toward Equality of Access: The Role of Public Libraries in Addressing the Digital Divide" (2008). Sponsored by the Gates Foundation, partnered with ALA and others, and research reviewed by Pew Internet. This is sort of a practical analysis of how public libraries help "bridge" the divide in America by providing free internet access. Stats on disadvantaged Americans and how libraries are really the only consistent places that offer free tech training and access. Several chapters included, could pick a few.--Suzanne http://www.imls.gov/pdf/Equality.pdf
- Nam, Taewon (2010) ."Who are political users of the Internet?: an empirical study of the democratic divide." Proceedings of the 11th Annual International Digital Government Research Conference on Public Administration Online: Challenges and Opportunities. p89-nam.pdf This document explores how online audiences use the Internet for political purposes, particularly in an electoral context, and whether the divide between users and non-users reflects the digital divide more broadly speaking. I think it helps shed light on a different facet of the digital divide in industrialized countries. The question is described as the "democratic divide" here to indicate its political import. --Tom
man, i hope that link works. anyway, this is an article on how the dd affects high school students in ca, changes teachers made in the classroom, and how it affected grades & student output. it might be interesting as a specific thing, i also really like the first 2 articles -ab
Suggestions for long video for class discussion
A Duke University lecture from Allison Clark, a UIUC-based member of HASTAC's steering committee: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VO-Lb1jUEbs.
You can learn more about HASTAC (and what the acronym stands for here): http://www.hastac.org/blogs/fionab/digital-divide-and-social-media-are-connections-growing-or-collapsing-or-both-once.
While not a general look at the Digital Divide, I think it's a very good example of applying information literacy to a particular problem - in this case, the digitial divide within African-American communities. Things really start to pick up at 9min 45sec.
I think her lecture's relevance can be summed up as "giving a voice to the voiceless."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEJIgDTrgho > America Offline, the video pairs with this page http://www.internetforeveryone.org/americaoffline (I hope no one's posted this already, I'm sorry if it's been covered). It's 2 years old now, but it puts faces to the situation and shows you real people who are suffering because of the divide. This leads into a specific case study (and series of videos), 5 days on the internet dirt road : http://www.internetforeveryone.org/americaoffline/nc where it tracks people in rural north carolina and their daily lives without the internet. i am alll about case studies, especially when it comes to the digital divide, because it gives us a really great look into what it really means to have to deal with this-ab.
Suggestion for short-ish video for presentation intro
We need one short video for the presentation
- "The Electronic Wasteland"...A 60 minutes news video about e-waste. A look at what happens to "obsolete" technology. Even when people think they're recycling technology, it may actually be ending up in poor countries, releasing toxic fumes. Haves vs. have nots. --Suzanne http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4586903n
- It may be a stretch, but I think there's an important thought here as to what sort of factors help reinforce the digital divide. Rushkoff speaks in very big terms like "humanness" - does the Internet foster it or condition its devolution? It's an interesting philosophical question; we might see his answer as "pessimistic," but I think he has identified an important factor that runs contrary to the goals of closing the digital divide. -- Tom http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p005c69y
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcboST0evqE&feature=related this is a 30 second spot with some typography that i think might be really great as just a little introduction. it's not heavy at all, but gets you into the frame of mind to start thinking about this stuff -ab
